AMERICANDREAMS: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CECILIE VILLADSEN
The founder and creative director of Americandreams — on the brand‘s philosophy, the meaning of color, and timeless quality.
How would you define the core philosophy of Americandreams in one or two sentences? Beyond knitwear and colour, what is the deeper idea the brand stands for?

Americandreams was founded on the belief that clothing should bring joy. Beyond creating beautiful knitwear, the brand is about optimism, self-expression, and the confidence that comes from wearing something that feels both effortless and uplifting. We want to create pieces that become part of people’s everyday lives while adding a sense of warmth, individuality, and positivity.

What are the brand's key pillars or values, the principles that guide every decision, from product design to communication?

Our core values are quality, authenticity, longevity, creativity, and optimism. Quality is reflected in our commitment to Italian craftsmanship and carefully sourced yarns. Authenticity means staying true to our identity rather than following trends. Longevity guides us to create timeless pieces that can be worn season after season. Creativity allows us to experiment with colour and texture, while optimism remains at the heart of everything we do, from product design to the way we communicate with our customers.

Colour is clearly central to the brand. Is it purely an aesthetic choice, or does it carry a deeper meaning?

Colour has always been much more than an aesthetic decision for us. It is an emotional language. We believe colour has the power to influence mood, create energy, and express personality. In a world that can often feel serious and fast-paced, colour brings a sense of joy, confidence, and playfulness. It has become one of the strongest ways we connect with our community.

How do you balance the Scandinavian minimalism of the silhouettes with the boldness of the colour palette?

That balance is one of the defining characteristics of Americandreams. The silhouettes remain clean, relaxed, and effortless, rooted in Scandinavian design principles. The colours bring personality and emotion. By keeping the shapes timeless and uncomplicated, the colour can take centre stage without feeling overwhelming. The result is a wardrobe that feels both modern and expressive.

Who is the Americandreams customer? Can you describe her? Age, lifestyle, what she does, how she thinks about getting dressed?

The Americandreams woman values individuality over trends. She is creative, confident, and curious about the world around her. She may be a student, entrepreneur, designer, mother, artist, or professional, but what connects her is a desire to dress authentically. She appreciates quality and comfort but also wants pieces that reflect her personality. She chooses clothing that feels effortless yet memorable.

Is there one customer profile, or do you see distinct audiences across different product categories, for example, the mohair pullover customer vs. the coat customer?

There is a common mindset across all categories, but we do see different expressions of the Americandreams customer. The iconic mohair customer is often drawn to colour, softness, and statement knitwear. The outerwear customer may be looking for a more refined and sophisticated wardrobe piece. What unites them is an appreciation for quality, timeless design, and products with a strong identity. How does she discover the brand: through specific retailers, Instagram?

Our customers discover Americandreams through a combination of channels. Many first encounter the brand through carefully selected retailers around the world, where they experience the products in person. Others discover us through Instagram, digital content, word-of-mouth recommendations, and seeing the brand worn by friends, creators, and women whose style they admire. The community around the brand has become one of our strongest forms of growth.

How would you describe the brand's price positioning: accessible luxury, contemporary premium, or something else?

We position Americandreams within the contemporary premium segment. We combine highquality Italian materials and craftsmanship with an accessible approach to luxury. Our goal is to create products that feel special and elevated while remaining relevant to everyday life.

Which brands does the Americandreams customer also wear or admire? Not necessarily competitors, but brands in the same emotional space.

Rather than direct competitors, we often see our customers drawn to brands that share a strong sense of identity and creativity. Depending on their style, this might include brands such as Ganni, Stine Goya, Baum und Pferdgarten, Acne Studios, and Isabel Marant. They appreciate brands that balance individuality, quality, and effortless style while maintaining a distinctive point of view.
